Introducing the Heiress Collection: A Tribute to Heritage and New Beginnings at LAFW

Introducing the Heiress Collection: A Tribute to Heritage and New Beginnings at LAFW

In October 2024, I had the honor of presenting my Heiress collection at Los Angeles Fashion Week, a collection close to my heart and rooted in the legacies of powerful women. This collection is not just a fashion line; it’s a journey—an homage to the lineage of seamstresses in my family and a celebration of the Nigerian culture I am embracing through marriage.

Honoring the Legacy of Women Before Me

The Heiress collection pays tribute to the artistry and skill of the women who came before me: my mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, each of whom left an indelible mark on my life as seamstresses. Growing up, I was immersed in a world where fabric, sewing machines, and creativity were woven into the daily fabric of my life. These women passed down not only their talents but also a spirit of resilience, passion, and devotion to the craft of fashion.

A Connection to Nigerian Culture

As I step into a new chapter, I find myself warmly welcomed by the Nigerian culture that my partner and his family share with me. This collection is a heartfelt nod to this culture, a beautiful and colorful world that I am honored to be part of. My mother-in-law gifted me Ankara fabric directly from Nigeria, a gesture that symbolizes the merging of two worlds and traditions. This fabric serves as the foundation of the Heiress collection, and its vibrant patterns and textures are woven into each piece as a symbol of unity, respect, and love.

The Design Process: Weaving Heritage and New Inspirations

Creating Heiress was both an introspective and inspiring process. I wanted the designs to reflect my heritage and the Nigerian culture I am now connected to. Each piece embodies the intricate craftsmanship I inherited and the boldness and richness of Ankara fabric, celebrating both traditions. This collection incorporates classic silhouettes infused with modern elements, capturing elegance and strength in every stitch.

  • Ankara-Inspired Wrap Skirts and Blazers: Combining traditional patterns with contemporary cuts, these pieces offer a seamless blend of old and new, creating versatile looks with depth and character.

  • Structured Dresses with Nigerian-Inspired Prints: These dresses are designed to honor Nigerian artistry while showcasing the skills passed down through generations, giving a modern edge to timeless traditions.

Presenting Heiress at LAFW

Debuting Heiress at Los Angeles Fashion Week was a dream come true. Walking onto that stage with pieces that tell my story, my family’s story, and the story of a culture that has welcomed me so warmly felt like an incredible milestone. Seeing the vibrant patterns, the intricate details, and the fusion of my heritage and newfound Nigerian inspirations come alive on the runway was a moment of pride and fulfillment.

The Meaning of Heiress

Heiress is more than a collection name; it represents the inheritance of strength, creativity, and tradition from all the incredible women before me. It is my way of honoring their legacy and celebrating the cultural fusion that now defines my life. Every piece in this collection is dedicated to them and to all women who embrace their roots while welcoming new traditions and identities with open arms.
